I have vivid memories of a bright orange colored lamp shade on a wooden lamp stand that took pride of place in our lounge for many years. However items like a desk lamp, a bedside lamp or a glass lamp shade never really became a big part of our home furnishings. Mum would shop for many things but exotic lighting with brightly colored lamp shades rarely made it onto her shopping list.

The lamps need to be placed where they will not obstruct the view. The height of most living room lamps is 26-34 inches tall. To determine the height without looking up, you may sit on a chair near the table where the lamp is and check if the shade bottom must not be higher than your eye level. Choose a sturdy-based lamp with adequate weight so it won't easily be knocked off with accidental bumps. Light sources in a room must be positioned 10 feet from one another.

Also I do love the relaxed atmosphere our bedside table lamps bring to the room where like everyone else I spend hours every night. Once again it's the ambient light that gets me! When I'm heading to bed after a long day I don't need bright lights glaring at me. I need rest, peace and calm. A well designed bedside lamp gives me that.

A thin-fabric lampshade should do. As a general rule of thumb for reading and table lamps, you will want the lampshade to be just over half the height of the base. If the lamp is going to be set on the floor and let off more light, a lampshade that's only one-fourth the base's height would be better.

More on the function side of things, you will want to ask the following question before installing any lamp - what's the purpose? Are you planning to use this lamp to heighten your decor? For reading? If your goal is to find the best reading lamp for your space, illuminating the entire room or sending light up to the ceiling probably won't be important.

It is not necessary to stick with the same decor style - unless you want to make a strong statement about that particular style. If updating a traditional room - a contemporary or modern lamp may be the right choice. But, be sure to relate the existing decor in some manner - through color, scale, and/or material. Typically, conical shaped shades provide a more traditional look, whereas a drum shade provides a more modern look.
