As I got older my parents prospered and suddenly lamps began appearing in our lounge room. I have vivid memories of a bright orange colored lamp shade on a wooden lamp stand that took pride of place in our lounge for many years. However items like a desk lamp, a bedside lamp or a glass lamp shade never really became a big part of our home furnishings. Mum would shop for many things but exotic lighting with brightly colored lamp shades rarely made it onto her shopping list.
For the living room, choose a lamp shade made of fabric or slightly opaque paper to provide warm glow in the room. If to be placed near a television, an opaque shade can be chosen to reduce glare. For a modern look, drum shades may be used and if traditional look is preferred, conical shades are recommended. For reading purposes, the lamp's bulb must be at least 60 Watts; a dimmer or three0way bulb can be used for modulating the brightness.
A lamp for the dining room can be from 20 to 36 inches in height. Choose a lamp that is just the right height so it would not shine straightly on the diner's eyes. Place a lamp with slim base in the dining room so it will take only less space and leave enough room for food platters, tableware stacks and other stuffs. To provide a romantic glow in the room, you can use a lamp with metallic gold or nickel interior and opaque shade. Bulbs to be used in dining rooms are below 60 Watts; bulbs with silver tips can effectively reduce glare.
More on the function side of things, you will want to ask the following question before installing any lamp - what's the purpose? Are you planning to use this lamp to heighten your decor? For reading? If your goal is to find the best reading lamp for your space, illuminating the entire room or sending light up to the ceiling probably won't be important.
