Many interior decorators and home design stores compare lamps to pieces of jewelry - in terms of a room's decor lamps aren't the main attraction, yet they can pull together or pull apart what you're trying to achieve. The key to finding the right lamp for any room is looking for that special piece that combines both form and function.
When selecting lamps for the living room, pick a fixtures that are good to look at whether the light is on or off. The lamps need to be placed where they will not obstruct the view. The height of most living room lamps is 26-34 inches tall. To determine the height without looking up, you may sit on a chair near the table where the lamp is and check if the shade bottom must not be higher than your eye level. Choose a sturdy-based lamp with adequate weight so it won't easily be knocked off with accidental bumps. Light sources in a room must be positioned 10 feet from one another.
If you're going to use your lamp mainly for reading, you would want a fairly sheer lampshade that doesn't trap light. A thin-fabric lampshade should do. As a general rule of thumb for reading and table lamps, you will want the lampshade to be just over half the height of the base. If the lamp is going to be set on the floor and let off more light, a lampshade that's only one-fourth the base's height would be better.
